Virginia Man Breaks Blue Catfish State Record
September 30, 2006
Captain Josh broke the Maryland state record for blue catfish, catching a
65-pound, 8-ounce fish on the tidal Potomac River near Fort Washington on
Saturday, September 30, 2006. Gizzard shad for bait on an 8/0 circle hook
snagged the record-breaking fish.
The previous record of 53
pounds was
set by Michael Kingree of Arlington, Virginia on December 6, 2001 on the
Greenway Flats on the tidal Potomac River. Blue catfish were first
documented in the tidal Potomac in the mid 1990s, and have increased in
numbers and size since that time.
Captain Josh is a regular participant in catfish tournaments and was named
"Angler of the Year" by the James River Catfishing Club in 2005.
Ron Lewis of Maryland now holds the new Maryland state record for blue catfish,
it also came out of the tidal Potomac River. March 23, 2008 he landed the new
state record blue catfish. Weighing in 67.1 pounds and measuring 51 inches long,
with a girth of 34.5 inches. Lewis’s catch broke the previous 65.5 pound state
record blue catfish set by Captain Josh in 2006 in the same general area of the
Potomac.
